EDUCATION MINISTRY INCREASES SCHOOLS' PER CAPITA AID

The Education Ministry has increased the per capita aid for rural schools having small number of students from January this year to bridge the rural and urban education gap, Bernama reports was quoted.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said schools with less than 20 students would receive per capita aid of RM13,040 compared to the old rate at RM9,840 while those with less than 50 students would get RM17,100 (RM11,700).

He said schools with less that 100 students would be eligible for per capita aid of RM24,600 against an old quantum of RM14,800 while those with less than 150 students would be given RM35,100 (RM17,900).

Roughly, schools with an enrolment of between 100 and 150 students
would get RM234 per student while those with less than 20 students (RM652), he said in a statement today.

For comparison with schools with large enrolment, he said for example schools with more than 1,000 students were getting RM193.50 per student.

He said the new rate would benefit small schools as it reflected their actual need.

Hishammuddin said 2,260 schools or 33 per cent of 7,513 primary schools nationwide have less than 150 pupils.

"Moreover, 90 per cent of the schools are in dire needs of facilities, trained teachers and allocation," he said.

The per capita aid is allotted to all government and government aided primary and secondary schools to finance teaching and learning as well as other activities especially tuition, counselling and those organised by the school resource centre.

The statement does not state the number of secondary schools with small number of students.

The Education Ministry is committed to providing quality education for all schools irrespective of their size, he said, adding that he believed the revised rate would help narrow the education gap between rural and urban schools.
